A submission for the 2024 CISC student competition, the Baline Bridge was inspired by the gentle majesty of the beluga whales that frequent the Baie Sainte-Marguerite in Sacré-Coeur, Quebec. Spanning 120m across Rivière Saguenay, the bridge connects the Beluga Education Centre to the hiking trails of the Saguenay Fjord National Park, providing a vital and accessible connection to an otherwise difficult-to-access path. With a commitment to ecological sensitivity, the bridge utilizes the strength and lightness of steel to create dynamic stainless-steel arches supported by a robust truss system.
This design mirrors the intricate structure of a beluga whale skeleton and symbolizes the vital role of whales in fostering community within the ecosystem. On the east side, the arches are rooted through a tail-like formation, while the curved guardrails echo the protective nature of a whale ribcage. The elevated viewing platform provides a tranquil spot for visitors of all ages to observe the beluga whales during summer migrations, minimizing disruptions of boat traffic and noise to whales’ echolocation capabilities.
